Revit 2013 – You can see the actual Sun

How to do it:

  1. Open a view in which the sun could ‘possibly be seen (ie. 3D View, Elevation view)
  2. Graphic Display Options – Lighting – Single Day
  3. Graphic Display Options – Background – Sky
  4. Your view needs to actually be able to see the sun (see steps below) … and it should be there.

You can even do this in a Hidden Line or Wireframe view.

Shadows do not need to be turned on.

If you want to quickly move the sun around WITHOUT having to use the graphic sun path:

  1. Follow steps 1 to 3 above
  2. Graphic Display Options – Lighting,  Tick the ‘sunrise to sunset’ button
  3. Turn Shadows On
  4. Click the Sun icon, then Preview Solar Study should be available
  5. This will reveal a little ‘player’ in the Options bar
  6. Click the Next Frame, Previous Frame buttons until you see the sun

Use Empty Curtain Wall type to clean up excess gridlines and mullions

It’s an old trick, but if you want to get rid of excess gridlines and mullions on a wall, just make a new Curtain Wall type that has no type-driven gridlines or mullions:

When you switch to this wall type, Revit will prompt you to delete the gridlines and mullions…

Revved – free Revit add-ins

Personally, I like the Component Commander and Open Folder tools.  Open Folder is a button that simply opens Windows Explorer to the folder of the currently active Project or Family – very handy!  (This is also a good way to find out the internally saved file location of a family – just click Edit Family from the Project Browser, then hit the Revved Open Folder button…)

ReVVed is a collection of Revit extensions that have been designed with the draftsperson in mind. ReVVed turns repetitive tasks into one click commands. These commands work with architecture, structure and MEP flavors of Revit. Commands like:

  • Text Tools – merge multiple text notes into a single note or change the case of notes.
  • Component Commander – allows loaded components to be searched and found easier.
  • Web Link – opens a web browser to the URL stored in Revit components.
  • Polyline – adjust the total length of end-to-end lines. (Like travel distances)
  • Open Folder – opens Windows Explorer to the folder where the project or linked file is located.
  • Project Commander – store critical information about the currently open project in a handy place.

How to create a Scope Box in the Family Environment

Isn’t it strange that Scope Box is a property of datums (like Reference Planes and Levels), AND its also a Property of Views (Floor Plans, Elevations, Sections etc) in the FAMILY environment, yet there is no tool to create a Scope Box available? (we are talking Revit 2012 here)

If you add a keyboard shortcut to Scope Box – it doesn’t work in the Family Editor…

If you add Scope Box to the Quick Launch toolbar – guess what?  The Scope Box tool suddenly ‘appears’ in the Family Editor – but it is always greyed out.  Remove it from Quick Launch, and it disappears just as suddenly… check it out:

How are we going to get around this one?  Simple – use this method to transfer a Scope Box from the Project Environment to a family RFA.  From there, we can copy the Scope Box from family to family as needed!
