Currently, exporting a flat 2D DWG file from AutoCAD or Navisworks to Revizto will probably yield the following message:

However, you can simply take these steps to work around the issue:

  1. Open the DWG file
  2. Select all objects
  3. Change the Thickness to something small but non-zero (like 0.1)

  4. Export the model to Revizto (either directly or via Navisworks)

  5. Once in Revizto, you may want to change the background of your Scene to all-white or some solid colour. Just click on Edit -> Lighting and Materials

  6. In the Editor, click on Illumination -> Environment Settings and change the Sky Type to Color

  7. Finally, click Save and Quit

In Revizto Viewer, you can now see your DWG file as thin surfaces where there used to be 2D lines. This also means that you can use the measure tool:

You can use a similar method to the above (change Thickness to non-zero) while using a 2D DWG file, to:

  • export from AutoCAD to Navisworks as ‘3D’ elements
  • export an FBX from AutoCAD as 3D

from the currently opened file!

So if you want to copy annotation and detail elements from one Plan View to another (without having to fiddle around with filtering of selections etc), just go to:

Then, browse to the currently opened file, select it, and then select the source view.  Click to place.  Done.

Also very cool:

  • ● this command has intelligence with regard to Detail lines vs Model lines!  Even though the Filter command cannot tell you if a line is Detail or Model, this Insert 2D Elements command will only bring detail lines
  • ● running this command places the items onto the Clipboard as well.  In certain situations, you can use the Paste Aligned command (such as between aligned Plan Views) AFTER you have finished placing the first instance of the 2D elements …

Oftentimes, you will want to flatten a DWG file before bringing it into Revit, so that Revit isn’t confused by all the Z-values… you can use FLATSHOT or the DXB plotter methods, as described below:

Issue
You want to create a flattened two-dimensional (2D) drawing of a three-dimensional (3D) model.

Solution
If you are using AutoCAD 2007 and higher, the FLATSHOT command is available to convert 3D solids to flattened 2D views. (Note this command is not available in AutoCAD LT.)

The other method to create a 2D drawing from a 3D model is to:

  1. Configure a DXB plotter using the Add-A-Plotter wizard
