To me, this type of simple viewing solution may present a good alternative to 3D PDF for sharing basic visualization models to the Client and other non-design-team stakeholders.  The key issue will be ensuring the web browser of the target user supports WebGL.  I think it should also provide a constrained orbit mode.

– Visible categories of the active 3D-View
– Solids and geometric instances inside the section box
The export itself creates a wpm file (WebGL-Publisher Model) and a html file which displays the exported model.
In addition to that all needed textures and JavaScript libraries are copied to the target directory.

Its an interesting read, as it provides a basic overview of Autodesk’s Vasari / Dynamo + DesignScript combo (including some of the history of its development), as well as considering the offerings of competitors (Bentley / Generative Components and Rhino / Grasshopper, and even formZ).  It closes with a decidedly Mac-centric prediction of where Revit may be headed in the future (you can be the judge of how realistic this prediction may be).

Here’s a juicy quote:

Collaboration is the buzzword in the AEC community for 2013.  Something relatively unique to the current era of technology is Architectural collaboration – more than one firm of Architects working on a single project.

But how do we collaborate across large geographic distances?  And how do Architectural collaborators (we are not talking about consultants here) handle modelling standards and model management in general?

Solar studies

Most of you already know that 360 Cloud Rendering will allow you to create a 360 degree panoramic view directly from Revit.  But did you know that you can download and view that interactive panorama offline?

Skip to the cool part of the video (embedded below).

Here’s how:

  1. In Revit 2013, Render in Cloud is on the View panel.  If you have lots of 3D views it can take a while to load the first dialog.
  2. Obviously, make sure you choose Interactive Panorama.  Use ‘Advanced’ Exposure (this may allow for more flexibility later).  Note: Set your DPI before choosing ‘Interactive’.  Small will match the views crop dimensions
  3. Once you have started the Render, it can take a long time to upload the data, but you will get an email telling you when it is ready.
  4. Download Panorama from  Mine came as a jpg.
  5. Download the offline viewer –
  6. Run kubegl.exe
  7. It will prompt you to open something – choose the panorama jpg.
  8. Once loaded, you will be in a full-screen viewing mode.  You can use your mouse to ‘look around’.  Use UP and DOWN arrow keys to zoom in / out and LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to pan.

Did you know that you have an offline copy of your Autodesk 360 Cloud data?  It lives here:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalAutodeskAutodesk SyncCloudCLOUDUSERNAME

If you put a file in this folder, it will automatically get Synced to your online 360 account.  It doesn’t seem to matter what the filetype is – it uploaded my something.whatever file quite happily.

I assume there is a system setting somewhere that sets the sync interval.

In any case, you could make a shortcut to this folder on your Desktop and use it as online file storage, if you so desire…
